Rhyming Book Project
Poor neglected blog, I realise I haven't posted anything in ages. So - here are some page spreads from a project I finished last year. One of my lovely clients who works in Taiwan teaches little children English. He wanted a book of traditional nursery rhymes that they could interact with while they learn. It was such a fun project and I love imagining these books over on the other side of the world all scribbled over and dog-eared :)

Illustration Friday
I.F. - 'Octopus'
I went to sea,
adventurous,
and caught myself
an octopus,
an octopus,
an octopus,
an octopus caught I.
And though it seems
a bit unjust
I put him in
a pastry crust,
a pastry crust,
a pastry crust,
and baked an octo-pie.
a bit unjust
I put him in
a pastry crust,
a pastry crust,
a pastry crust,
and baked an octo-pie.
the poem is by Kenn Nesbitt

I.F. - 'search'
Had a little time over the weekend to get back into Illustration Friday which I abandoned a bit last year. This week's topic is 'search'. So apparently squirrels are not very good at remembering where they buried their nuts - not good for the squirrels but good for the forests as it helps to propagate new trees. They're not totally daft though, they are known to bury 'fake' nuts to prevent other animals from finding their stash!

My new endeavour
I haven't done a blog post for AGES due to laziness and overwork but I thought I would say a little something about my new hobby. A series of events led to me discovering the wonders of Polymer clay. A long, long time ago my dream was to be a potter. I had my own studio, wheel, kiln etc. but being a potter is HARD. It takes years of practise and a lot of talent to become successful, and at it's worst it's cold, dirty and frustrating. So I haven't done pottery in many years. But polymer clay is a whole different story. You can sit and watch TV in the warm and do it, it takes 30 minutes in the oven as opposed to hours in a kiln. Your wares come out looking just the same as they went in, not warped and cracked and miscoloured. Ok so it doesn't have the gravitas of ceramics but it's FUN and stress relieving and I have been indulging in so much stress relief that I have a glut of little monsters that I have nick-named 'Monjoo' and they are now for sale on Etsy ... here's a few of the little critters:

I.F - 'Myth'
Been a while since I've done an Illustration Friday but I got a little bit of spare time over the weekend courtesy of being snowed-in! Is he a myth or is he real?

I.F. - 'Haunt'
Finally had some time over the weekend to do an Illustration Friday for the first time in ages. Although I had the time, I didn't have any ideas for the subject 'haunt' so I went googling for ghosts and ghouls and ghastly inspiration but got distracted by the Ghost Chili. Now I've never met a chili that could get the better of me, in some circles I am known as Asbestos Tongue and this is apparently a pretty fiery specimen - I'm on the hunt for some for the next time I make pizza. So that got me looking for other things named after ghosts and here are four of them. The ghost bird is actually an Ivory-billed Woodpecker that was believed extinct until recently - 'GhostBird' is the name of the film about the search for him. Happy Halloween everybody ... whooooooooooo!

I.F. - 'Space'
Well, Illustration Friday is nothing if not educational. Whilst trying to get some inspiration for the theme of 'space' I came across the toughest creatures known to mankind - Tardigrades aka Water Bears aka Moss Piglets. (Google them - they really are this cute!) They can withstand extremes of temperature, pressure, dehydration and radiation that would kill most other living things and because of their supreme survival skills (Bear Grylls eat your heart out!) they were sent into outer space to see how they fared. Hope they're OK out there!

Illustration Friday - Kernel
I could have played around with this topic for ages making patterns but I ran out of time - kernel inspired wallpaper - a whole room of it may be a bit much but I think just one panel might look nice -maybe in a seventies kind of way!
